Avenier and Miguel Cornejo
Christelle Avenier and Miguel Cornejo are both graduates of the École Supérieure in Paris Malaquais. They have worked for Mathias Klotz (Santiago, Chile), Douglas Deremer (San Francisco, USA), and for French studios like François Roche (R&Sie(n)), XTU, Jacques Ferrier, and Galiano & Simon before founding their own studio in Paris.
After receiving the Électra scholarship (EDF) for a project in Valparaíso, Chile, and completing several private commissions, in 2007 they secured their first public commission, a residential project.
Projects and Achievements
Subsequently, the studio designed a house in Orsay, residences for developers Elogie-Siemp and Efidis, a hostel for young workers, and a nursery in the development area of Les Lilas, a student residence for RIVP, housing, a nursing home, and a childcare facility in the Clichy Batignolles development area, a Bepos building on Rue de Charenton, and a retirement home in Paris. They operate throughout France on all scales, from individual lots to entire neighborhoods. Their buildings can be seen in Paris, Pantin, Massy, Clichy-la-Garenne, Villejuif, Lille, Nantes, Toulouse, and in Chile.
Design Approach and Recognitions
Avenier Cornejo's approach is inventive and free from preconceptions or biases. Each project is a source of reflection, each need has multiple possible responses, and each architectural proposal elicits fruitful reactions. Their work focuses on optimizing materials and attention to detail, aiming to maximize both efficiency and performance, contributing to the elegance of a building and its ecological credentials.
The studio has won the "Europe’s emerging 40 under 40" award. The hostel and nursery in Les Lilas were finalists for the Équerre d’argent award in 2014, and the 88 housing units in Pantin were selected for the Équerre d’argent 2019 in the "residences" category. They also won the Brick Award 22 in the "Living together" category.
Exhibitions and Teaching
The studio's works have been exhibited in Paris, London, New York, and Calgary, and they regularly participate in conferences and symposia (RIBA, AIA NYC, University of Calgary, and the Europe Super Session at the Venice Biennale). Recently, they were invited as guest teachers at the Technische Universität in Vienna.
