Architecture in Economic Depression
Paulo Moreira Architecture is a studio based in Porto.
Specialized in developing architectural, cultural, and research projects for the post-economic boom era.
The studio was founded in 2011, during a period of economic depression and limited opportunities for high-impact architecture.
The seemingly irrational decision to return to Portugal while pursuing an academic career in the UK stemmed from a growing desire to participate, both as a professional and as a citizen, in the revitalization of a particular street in Paulo's hometown - Rua dos Caldeireiros - which was in desperate need of architectural attention.
Small steps
The initial renovations of historically sensitive buildings were small steps towards a long-term commitment to actively contribute to the restoration and enhancement of the city. Since then, further projects and commissions have come to us, in Porto, Lisbon, and elsewhere - residential, educational, commercial, and industrial projects, as well as interventions in the public realm.
Architecture as Intellectual Commitment
Concurrently, deeply engaged in research development in the field of architecture, particularly in contexts of urban conflict and social deprivation. The studio's projects and research are means through which they seek a broader intellectual commitment.
An international team of collaborators works throughout Portugal and abroad, reinventing a new role for architecture today.
