From the Volvo Design Challenge to the Centre Pompidou
Acquired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2017, Lilian Van Daal's project of the biomimetic car seat Shape of Sweden was developed for the Volvo Design Challenge in 2015
Shapes of Sweden is flexibility, resilience, and stability: the essential functions of a car seat that are translated into material through what the Swedish nature provides and inspires
Acquired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2017, Lilian Van Daal's project of the biomimetic car seat Shape of Sweden was developed for the Volvo Design Challenge in 2015
The concept originates from the designer's immersion in Swedish nature and the essence of the Volvo brand to seek the heart of both and create an efficient seat using local natural resources characterized by abundant availability
The biomimetic approach translates into a research on bio-based materials such as wood and pine resin, typical of the Swedish nature, and, together with Yashwant Pathak, in the effort to make them 3D printable
Not only the materials that make up the Shape of Sweden, but also the forms are inspired by nature: tree branches, pine cones, veins are used to structure every function of the seat
