Can architecture integrate with nature? Hotel Umami

The Umani Hotel designed by STARH Stanislavov Architects is located near the Golden Sands Natural Park, close to the city of Varna in Bulgaria, in a breathtaking natural setting, overlooking the Black Sea.

Walking through the area, the architectural structure of the Umami hotel slowly emerges through the lush foliage of oaks and maples. Almost blending in with the surrounding nature. Despite the area being quite busy due to its proximity to the well-known Golden Sands Resort, the space where the Umami Hotel stands appears as a natural oasis of peace and relaxation.

The architectural project merging with nature

Initially, the client planned the design of a residential building, but during the process, they decided to transform the project into a hotel structure to be managed directly. The challenge for the architecture firm STARH Stanislavov Architects was to create a lodging facility completely integrated into the landscape.
The terrain slopes significantly from west to east, surrounded by an untouched landscape with valuable tree species and natural rock formations.
The project's concept is to create contextualized architecture that easily blends into the natural environment, appearing light, airy, and unobtrusive. Through a suggestive interplay between architectural elements and nature, the structure harmoniously integrates with the surroundings and the landscape. It stands out without dominating the scenery.

A Linear Design that Camouflages Itself.

The design is simple and entirely subordinate to the natural characteristics of the property - a narrow orthogonal rectangular prism that fits between the tall trunks of lush trees and massive rocks.
To achieve greater camouflage, the design of the facades is entirely made of vertical slats of Finnish Thermowood, surrounding the entire structure. Dynamism is introduced by subtracting volume in various points where emphasized loggias are formed by the clean line of glass.

Interiors that extend until merging with the horizon

The light floors and extra-large windows of the hotel rooms allow guests to gaze out: from the richness of the vegetation to the immense stretch of the sea horizon that gradually appears.
The delicate architecture of Hotel Umani is a mystical reflection of the nature and peace it is surrounded by, ensuring guests an experience of complete harmony.
