UPA's vision for the VGIK Auditorium

The VGIK Auditorium, designed by UPA Italia by Paolo Lettieri Architects, represents an absolute innovation in interior design projects. Located in the new wing of the historic VGIK university in Moscow, founded in 1919, the project has transformed the spaces into a landmark for cinematography and performing arts. The main hall with 589 seats, along with the experimental theater and two cinema halls, combines functionality, technology, and distinctive design.

Variable Acoustics and Advanced Technology

The main challenge of the project was to create perfect acoustics for different uses, from cinema to concerts and theatrical performances. The solution was found through an innovative system of rotating wooden panels designed by engineer Marcello Brugola. This system, controlled by software, allows for modifying the acoustics of the room, switching from high sound absorption capacity to optimal reflection, thus adapting to different artistic needs.

A modern and recognizable design

The use of Topakustik curved wood panels, never before realized at these dimensions, has shaped a ceiling that combines aesthetics and functionality. The ceiling's curves, designed to control sound reflections, are interspersed with horizontal cuts that integrate lights, air vents, and fire safety systems. This innovative design gives a uniform and contemporary look to the space, making it highly recognizable.

A symbolic place for cultural events

Despite the challenges during construction, the VGIK Auditorium was inaugurated with great success. Its opening, attended by President Vladimir Putin, established this space as an ideal venue for festivals and artistic events. Thanks to the combination of cutting-edge technology, excellent acoustics, and unprecedented design, the auditorium has become a landmark for Moscow's cultural scene.
