Birdhouse: the stairs step aside, the common space takes center stage

Birdhouse is born from the customers' desire to have a large common space that is not divided by stairs: the latter are moved outside the main perimeter of the house, in the north part, hosting only one round window that resembles the appearance of a new birdhouse.

A round window evokes a birdhouse

Birdhouse, located in a dense neighborhood of private houses in Vilnius, is a residence designed by YLC studio, known for other architectural projects. Covering 182 square meters over two floors, with a small volume serving as a garage, it creates an intriguing architecture that changes appearance as you walk around it. The defining feature of the facade is a small round window on the north side of the house, reminiscent of a birdhouse.

The division of internal spaces

The living area occupies the entire first floor, along with a bathroom, a utility room, and a guest room, which can also be used for work purposes. The sleeping area is designed on the upper floor, where there are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a void that overlooks the floor below.

House of Mirrors

The continuously evolving surrounding environment subtly reflects in the architectural details mirrored: the houses, the people, the day, the night, adding color and character to the dark thermo-treated wood facade and creating a dialogue with the surrounding environment.

Privacy from the adjacent lot is ensured by the garage volume with a mirrored facade, which reflects an illusion of the extended courtyard in a parallel world. This design choice aims to minimize the aesthetic discomfort of having a separate volume within a private courtyard.

Formal continuity of the facade

The rhythm of the windows on the south facade seeks to be as conservative as possible, promoting the monolithic appearance of the residence. The suspended terrace roof makes the outdoor space of the family more welcoming even in case of rainy weather.

The residence, with its compact shape, stands out in the colorful context in which it is located, identifying itself as contemporary architecture that paves the way for a new type of more modern private housing construction.
