Bostanlı Sunset Lounge. Urban regeneration between sea, wood, and sunset.

Designed to connect the two sides of the river, Bostanli Sunset Lounge is a project by Studio Evren Başbuğ Architects, as part of the coastal regeneration concept "IzmirSea" to create new urban spaces between social, territory, and history.

A place of contemplation by the sea

The Bostanlı Sunset Lounge is one of the most emblematic elements of the İzmirDeniz coastal regeneration project, designed by Studio Evren Başbuğ Architects, known for its innovative architectural projects. Located in a privileged position on the Karşıyaka coast, the platform extends along one of the few stretches facing directly west, offering an uninterrupted view of the sea and the sunset. This space invites residents and visitors to rediscover the ancient tradition of admiring the sun at sunset, making it a collective and shared ritual.

A fluid and welcoming design

The Sunset Lounge is built on a series of cascading platforms made of thermo-treated ash wood, arranged to form an open and inviting urban surface. The project's simple and fluid lines create a direct connection with the surrounding nature, offering visitors the opportunity to lie down, sit, or walk freely, experiencing a unique sensory experience. The choice of wood, with its natural texture, helps make the space warm and welcoming, like a true open-air living room.

Connection between city and nature

The Sunset Lounge is located between an artificial hill covered with trees and the quay gently sloping towards the water. This positioning allows for a total immersion in nature, offering multiple observation points that frame the seascape. Its strategic location and the simplicity of the design promote a spontaneous and relaxed interaction with the urban and natural context, transforming a stretch of coast into a place of socializing and contemplation.

Natural Materials and Sustainability

Thermally treated wood has been chosen for its resistance to marine climate conditions and its ability to maintain a natural and welcoming appearance. The platforms extend to the sea, while the natural stone flooring bound with resin ensures an effective drainage system for rainwater. Furthermore, the existing trees have been preserved and integrated, contributing to creating a pleasant natural shading. The sustainable design reflects the goal of creating a durable and environmentally friendly urban space.

A new symbol for the İzmir community

Since its opening, the Sunset Lounge has become an iconic place for the city of İzmir, attracting a constant flow of visitors eager to enjoy the sunset and direct contact with the sea. This intervention has redefined the concept of public space, promoting a simple and spontaneous way of living in the city. The project has had a strong social impact, becoming a symbol of urban regeneration and contributing to the strengthening of İzmir's collective identity.
