Ca'n Rei Townhouse, a traditional architecture seen through a contemporary perspective

Isla Architects completed the renovation of an old Majorcan residence in Banyalbufar, a coastal village nestled in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which involved restoring the main structure, roof and facade, as well as rearranging the interior

Ca'n Rei is a balance of new and old, elegant and rustic, and allows you to understand traditional architecture through a contemporary lens. The kitchen is concealed within the walls to enhance the purity of the vaulted room and make the space more flexible

The space is extremely clean to emphasize the house's original furniture as well as the new additions: the vaulted ceiling was treated with quicklime in the traditional way, resulting in a smooth, pure, shiny white surface

In the bathroom, the height was increased, the geometry purified and the window was significantly raised, creating a more comfortable and bright space. A smooth concrete floor and wall surface replaced the non-original tiles and contrasted with the rustic, old stone wall discovered during construction

In the bedroom, a handmade local terracotta floor replaced the non-original concrete tiles, resulting in a warmer, smoother feel to the space. The original Mallorca beds were retained as the central elements of the rooms

Both the roof and the rear facade were renovated following traditional construction techniques, and new windows were opened on the upper floor in order to allow cross-ventilation. Following the medieval Majorcan tradition of painting the lower part of the canopy of artist Luis Urculo, was invited to reinterpret this popular pictorial expression. The rust-colored symbols are meant to bring good luck and keep the evil spirits away from the inhabitants of the house
