Cabins and saunas from latvian tradition at Ziedlejas Wellness Resort

Located in a secluded spot in rural Latvia, the Ziedlejas Wellness Resort offers natural retreats away from the chaos of modernity. Latvian tradition and heritage are at the heart of what the project represents in terms of the purpose of the cabins and the three saunas, while functionality and aesthetics meet with a refined contemporary design

The integrated vision of folklore and innovation

The project for the Ziedlejas Wellness Resort has been an evolving process founded on a high level of mutual trust between the owners, the architects at Open AD, and the landscape team. The focus of the intervention concerns maintaining Latvian heritage without fearing the new. The resort is a place to taste the spirit and local ways: guests can learn about traditions and folklore through a deep respect for craftsmanship, the environment, and the growing human desire to reconnect with nature

The white sauna and the smoke sauna

Constructed with concrete for the structure and natural, locally sourced materials like wood and linen, the "baltā pirts" or white sauna, is nestled on the hillside to avoid obstructing the view from the guest cabins. It enjoys natural light and proximity to a pond, ideal for plunging into. The "melnā pirts", the more traditional smoke sauna, is made of red spruce and hidden in the forest

Corten steel and glass cabins

Following the construction of the saunas, four cabins made of Corten steel and glass were built to accommodate visitors. Multifunctional, with a design that is both simple and warm, the cabins serve as tea rooms by day and bedrooms by night. The front facade, roof, and sides of the cabins offer an immersive experience in the pristine landscape and under the starry night sky. Adjacent herbal beds allow guests to pick and prepare their own tea blends. The staff is knowledgeable and can explain the properties of each plant

Subsequent developments of the resort

A central pavilion for weddings, yoga classes, conferences, vigils, and other events, the third sauna or 'aitas vilnas pirts' (sheep wool sauna) with special healing properties, a larger building for reception, bicycle rental, and a few more rooms will complete the offerings at the Ziedlejas Wellness Resort
