The University's expansion is located at its front doors: the existing Student Union Building needed to expand its spaces and add more. The Campus Commons project, by Ikons 5 Arkitects, was to transform the image of the University from a state institution to a unique and recognizable image for SUNY New Paltz

The project was inspired by the unique regional landscape of New York State's Catskill Mountains and is a crystalline edifice whose form and surface recall the tectonic character of the Catskill's Shawangunk Mountain , located just beyond the site
Located between two existing concrete Brutalist buildings, the glass expansion has a fresh and iconic character while still respecting the mid-20th century concrete Brutalist structures adjacent to the expansion. The project at the same time is connected to the existing buildings and uses these buildings as a backdrop
The Campus Common space is flexible and column-free with a glass skin. This space is student-centered, providing a place for students to gather, study, play, and work collaboratively. It is a place to see and be seen
