The renovation of Can Tomeau for a conscious and sustainable tourism among cultural assets of local interest

Located at the entrance to the Parc Natural de Garraf, just outside the town of St Pere de Ribes, Can Tomeu was built for agricultural and stone working purposes.  Over time, the abandoned building slowly deteriorated and only its load-bearing walls survived the deterioration.
The intervention of Andrea Solé Arquitecta was aimed at the conservative recovery of the original volume and the expansion of the latter, given the legislation that permits it, by 30% in the form of annexation

The original project underwent radical transformations in the executive phase due to unexpected occurrences such as the masonry being in worse condition than expected and the structures collapsing. Therefore, a great consolidation work with iron and cement nets took place, which finally allowed the preservation of the walls and the raising of the volume.
On the other hand, the window and door frames were updated, the new ones made of wood instead of the original ones made of iron which warmed up the atmosphere; a new ceramic floor also contributed to the Mediterranean sensations enabling savings to be made simultaneously

From a functional point of view, the execution of the project moves the main access in a double-height room that becomes the central space of the house. On the left are the bedrooms each with their own bathroom, and on the right, in the extension area are the kitchen and living room.
This annex formed by two twin volumes opens to the outside through large windows that allow you to enjoy the natural panorama

The surrounding outdoor space is altered by the new volume and a platform elevated above the ground that acts as a lookout over Garraf Park and at the same time helps to distinguish the private path from that of visitors to the site.
The performance is a second life for the building and gives the opportunity to rediscover the existing interior spaces with their clear and powerful geometry that constitute a new spatial experience after the intervention

The recovery of the entire architectural complex takes place in the utmost respect of the context following the criteria of sustainability necessary to preserve the natural environment, thus promoting a sustainable and self-sufficient tourism. A project to manage the entire architectural complex in a self-sufficient way has also been implemented (solar panels, reuse of grey water and rainwater with natural phyto-purification processes)
