3 patios, 4 meters, 3 spaces: Casa 3 Patios

The design challenge of the Casa 3 Patios project was to build the 3 desired spaces on a 4-meter wide site: the concept was based on the creation of 3 internal courtyards that would segment the project into 3 different cores

The Casa 3 Patios project is developed on a site four meters wide and forty meters deep in an old damaged house in the center of the city of Merida. The goal of Revolution Architects was to create a low-cost vacation rental house that was strongly focused on user experience and comfort

The concept was based on the creation of three courtyards inside the house that segment the project into 3 volumes, 2 habitable in the front and back areas and a central one that serves as a core for vertical and horizontal circulations: the three patios are distributed among these volumes.
The three patios aim to create a natural ventilation system to minimize energy consumption and be sustainable by allowing end-to-end cross-ventilation. The presence of the tree in the backyard blocks direct sunlight on the facade of the house, allowing for large windows and terraces that give a greater sense of openness to the interior of the spaces

The main facade, being north-facing, allows for large windows with terraces overlooking the main patio. The exterior facade of the house is a trellis, a traditional element of Yucatan architecture, which allows visual permeability to the main patio during the day, being able to appreciate the presence of the vegetation inside but at the same time maintaining the privacy of the house

The house has three levels. On the ground floor are the common area, kitchen, dining room and living room; on the upper levels are the bedrooms, two facing the main patio and two facing the back garden patio, all with cross ventilation and terrace. The house is built with a simple method of load-bearing block walls and slab beams and vaults, including a suspended ceiling for El Paso structures. The finish of all walls is Chukum and the slabs are polished concrete in a similar tone to the walls
