Volumetric Tetris for the Multipurpose Center in Matagorda

The project for the Multifunctional Center in Matagorda starts from the premise of being a compact and simple architecture, adapted to the urban delimitation and defined in the municipal planning, in close relationship with the cultivated landscape under the expanse of greenhouses typical of the region where it is located, Almeria in Spain.

A dialogue with the surrounding landscape

The Matagorda Multipurpose Center, designed by the Fresneda & Zamora Arquitectura studio, strategically integrates into the northern boundary of the plot, establishing a direct dialogue with the main road. This intervention, typical of contemporary architectural projects, allows for the liberation of the rest of the land, transforming it into a welcoming and functional space dominated by a belvedere overlooking the fascinating and vast "sea of plastic." This design choice emphasizes the intention to enhance the surrounding landscape, creating a balance between the built environment and nature.

A game of volumes for functional spaces

The architecture of the center stands out for a composition of volumes of different scales, reminiscent of a volumetric "tetris". This configuration creates a compact, orderly, and organic building, where the various internal spaces harmoniously integrate with the exterior. The complex houses a variety of services, including a sports field, classroom-laboratories, meeting rooms, restrooms, and changing rooms. The volumetric fragmentation promotes a constant transition between interior and exterior, through covered intermediate spaces that invite movement and discovery.

Rationality and sustainability as guiding principles

Construction choices are guided by principles of rationality, efficiency, and economic sustainability, responding to budget constraints without compromising the quality of the project. The building structure is made with stainless steel porticos, a solution that ensures ease of execution and robustness. This approach allows for the integration of elements of transparency, dual lighting, and natural ventilation, improving the comfort of interior spaces and reducing the environmental impact.

The visual identity between concreteness and lightness

The external image of the Multipurpose Center is defined by the purity of the surfaces in white precast concrete, alternated with shading panels that protect the glass areas. The prefabricated elements, used vertically as sunshades, provide visual and thermal protection, while horizontally on the floor they recall their original function, creating a fluid relationship between architecture and landscape. The shadows generated by the volumes and the contrast between different textures and opacities add plastic qualities to the whole, making it an architectural element that poetically interacts with the context.
