The Citadel of Budapest: breathtaking panorama and historical memory

The Budapest Citadel, located on top of Gellért Hill, is one of the main historical and tourist attractions of the city. Over the years, it has had various uses until it was transformed and expanded to become a multifunctional cultural center, including an open-air theater, a hotel, a memorial museum, and various shops.

The architectural element

Barna Architects designs a shell as the main attribute of the extension of the Cittadella, which flows around the existing walls, creating a structure that becomes a work of art itself.

New architecture

The structural constraint of the extension is the geometry of the roof, so the morphology of the roof shell adapts to this environment. The intervention includes the construction of a new structure that extends around the existing walls of the Citadel. The new addition is characterized by a shell-shaped form, which harmoniously integrates with the morphology of the hill and the existing fortress. The roof geometry and the morphology of the roof shell have been designed to fit perfectly into the surrounding environment. Architectural projects like this demonstrate how architectural solutions can give a new meaning to spaces.
