With the steep topography at the back of the lot and incredible views all around, it would have come natural to settle the house in the center of the land, impacting a large field where deer and elk come to feed. Instead, the family chose to leave the field in its natural, pristine state. The Fat Deer Lodge, named after the daughter of the commissioning family in honor of the deer and elk with whom they share the land, is designed by Cushing Terrell Studio so that it remains tucked away on the opposite side of the lot creating minimal disturbance to the site

The living spaces are oriented toward the view of Trapper Peak: no matter where you are in the house,you will always have a view of the mountain framed by the large windows. The house was intentionally designed to appear minimal in the front and blend in with the tree line, while the back is expansive with extensively glazed walls that create a treehouse feel
The goal was to design an intimate home of a size just right for the family's lifestyle. Double-height volumes and windows overlooking trees and mountains give the feeling of a much larger space. Although the Fat Deer Lodge has hints of a mountain aesthetic, such as rough-hewn beams made of reclaimed wood, it actually has a modern soul. The externally wood-clad home uses a simple material palette, white oak floors and high ceilings anchored by a floor-to-ceiling fireplace create a bright, open space
The house tells in its details the passions and habits of its inhabitants: a cinema room, a barbecue tucked in the back of the large fireplace, a home design that includes work spaces for the heads of the family; the pleasure of hosting is embodied in the future guest house being planned and in the guest room with bathroom already in the residence. The daughter's room, on the other hand, is a true private realm for her and her friends, with bunk beds and a sitting area with a corner window framing Trapper Peak. Finally, personal touches are found throughout the residence, testaments to the love of art and the space to be inhabited
