'Outside the Lines' at the Arcimboldi Theater. An immersive and refined place on an artist's terms
'Outside the Lines' at the Arcimboldi Theater. An immersive and refined place on an artist's terms

The project "Fuori dalle righe" (outside the lines) of dressing room 16 at the Arcimboldi Theater.

As part of the 'Vietato l'ingresso' initiative promoted by the theater designed by Gregotti, in which 17 architecture studios were invited to transform as many dressing rooms, DAP studio created 'Fuori dalle righe', a enveloping space of great elegance, ideal for the artist's concentration. Warm and precious materials were chosen, along with modular scenic lighting and graceful design to 'carve out a symbolic, almost sacred space' and make it unique.

The immersive dressing room

Designed and created with a minimalist approach devoid of decoration and set design, the dressing room 16 'adopted' by the Milanese studio delicately and respectfully fits into the strong and rigorous architecture of Gregotti. The result is an immersive and refined space, characterized by a wooden shell that, starting from the entrance walls, unfolds and 'unrolls' like a soft wave on the ceiling, covering the makeup area wall.

Architectural Space and Materials

Architectural spatiality, preciousness of materials, and attention to details are the key elements adopted by DAP studio to give life to a magical and secret place where actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and performers prepare to take the stage. It is a space where one enters as a person and exits as a character, crossing a threshold between the real world and the artistic dimension.

The details of "Outside the lines"

The architectural firm, specialized in interior design projects, builds the space around the artist. Upon entering, a ribbon of wooden slats interspersed with spaced slats rises towards the ceiling, envelops it, unfolds towards the artist's workstation, and extends along the makeup station. The entrance has been made three-dimensional with the creation of built-in wardrobes and containers integrated into the wall cladding, as well as technical compartments.

Natural Light

Two brass skylights frame the sky and, like natural spotlights, flood the dressing room with light, assisted by a system of spotlights and LEDs, inserted with magnets even among the slats, creating a soft scenography in the evening hours, regulated at the discretion of the artist who can reposition them and create different lighting scenarios via app or remote control.

Linear design and designer objects

Linear design is unobtrusive and offers flexibility in spaces, while the essential elements stand out: the round mirror for makeup, the Gio Ponti armchair, the flower vase, the vertical wall mirror, the cozy nest. And the artist. The brass color scheme is repeated in some furnishing details, and warm and precious materials have been used overall - such as the specially created parquet floor painted black. Black dominates uniformly where the wooden cladding is not present, adding elegance and neutrality to all the structural parts of the dressing room and the mirror's metal frame.
