Habitación Fundamental: modular design for the Chilean coast

Habitación Fundamental, designed by the studio República Portátil, is a prefabricated housing module for the surf camp "Puntas del Maule" in Pelluhue. Innovation and sustainability for tourism that challenges wind, humidity, and the charm of the Chilean coast.

A refuge for surfers on the Chilean coast

The waves of the Pacific Ocean, crashing on the coast of Pelluhue, Chile, are an irresistible magnet for surfers from all over the world. To meet the needs of these travelers, the surf camp "Puntas del Maule" has decided to expand its offerings with Habitación Fundamental. This prototype, designed by the studio República Portátil, is an innovative example of architectural projects that combine comfort, sustainability, and design. The prefabricated structure integrates seamlessly into the natural landscape, offering a housing solution capable of successfully addressing the environmental challenges typical of the region.

A housing module designed for extreme climates

The housing module was born out of the need to provide comfortable temporary accommodation, quickly built and resistant to extreme weather conditions. Composed of 21 prefabricated elements, the module has been designed to be easily transportable by truck and assembled on-site in just two and a half days. Every detail has been carefully studied to withstand the constant wind and high humidity typical of the Chilean coast, without compromising on a functional and welcoming architecture that perfectly suits the short-term needs of surfers.

Innovative Materials and Sustainable Solutions

The structure of the module is entirely made of wood, with a special focus on the choice of materials to ensure thermal insulation and energy efficiency. The wooden panels are covered with a waterproof rubberized fabric and integrate 12 cm insulating mats, positioned between the sloping planes and the horizontal framework of the shelter. The front facades are instead characterized by a double chamber in cellular polycarbonate, which, thanks to an air gap, improves the thermal performance of the structure, making it comfortable in all seasons.

Traditional techniques for protection and durability

Another distinctive element of the project is the use of the Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban to treat the poles that support the module. This technique involves charring the wood, protecting it from weather and biological agents, and extending its lifespan. The eight wooden poles treated with this finish not only ensure stability and resistance but also elevate the structure off the ground, reducing the impact on the soil and promoting integration with the natural landscape.

A vision for the future of coastal tourism

Fundamental Room represents much more than a temporary refuge: it is a modular base designed to be expanded and adapted for future architectural developments. This prototype perfectly combines innovation, sustainability, and respect for the environment, offering a versatile and replicable housing model capable of enhancing the tourist experience on the Chilean coast. A project that looks to the future while maintaining strong roots in tradition and the local area.
