Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili Residence: design, sustainability, and community

The Residenza Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili residence in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a project that combines sustainability values and community living in its design, creating 105 affordable housing units for seniors

Elderly Residence Awarded with the Building Industry Association Design and Construction Grand Award

Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili is one of the several award-winning architectural projects by AHL. Completed in 2023, the elderly residence wins the Building Industry Association Design and Construction Grand Award in the Multifamily Development category. Constructed with a wooden and reinforced concrete structure, the 6-story building houses 80 studio apartments and 25 one-bedroom units, all featuring high-end modern finishes: stone countertops in the kitchens, custom-made furniture from local production, energy-efficient appliances

Multipurpose Spaces for a Comfortable and Socially Rich Life

All housing units are suitable or adaptable to the needs of people with disabilities and boast a special focus on comfort and acoustics. The offer for residents is enriched by the presence of multipurpose spaces and services: a social center, a hub for culture and gatherings, complemented by an outdoor hall to enjoy the weather and company; a computer lab for easy access to online resources and the latest technologies; a shared laundry room to optimize consumption and space

LEED Gold Certification. Sustainability, safety, and innovation

Given the urban context in which Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili is located, space is limited and precious: the project involves a hybridization of functions in common areas such as the outdoor hall, which also serves as a lounge, and the administrative office housing the computer lab. The project is LEED Gold certified thanks to the adoption of passive design strategies, energy-saving appliances, and LED lighting powered by solar energy. The building is one of the first of its kind in Hawaii: the concrete structure protects the building from tsunami waves, is fire-resistant, and allows for the construction of 6 floors, making it one of the tallest wooden structures in Hawaii
