Hankasalmi School Centre: the project focused on experiences and encounters rather than on a building

The design of schools is not limited to the design of a simple building, but of well-being, of premises for activities, experiences and meetings aimed at growth: this is the case of Hankasalmi School Centre, the school of the small Finnish municipality that has become the pride of all its inhabitants

A sculptural building with moderate facades and a wooden entrance that blends harmoniously into its surroundings: Hankasalmi School Centre by Parviainen Architects is a project dedicated to improving learning and study through the lively and adaptable layout of the new school complex

The lobbies have been equipped as facilities for art, culture and sports, while the stairways are places for socializing, learning and performing. Spaces can be easily subdivided with furniture and other dividing elements in order to create "pop up" classrooms or temporary learning environments

Navigating from one space to another is facilitated by various nature themes: as Hankasalmi is known for its wood industry, each part of the school center has an emblematic tree which is highlighted in the materials and colors. The trees on the exterior follow the interior themes, identifying each entrance. In addition to the trees, the spaces have graphic references that add distinctiveness to the school
