Heerweg Residential Buildings. Twenty-eight housing units in two dynamic volumes

The Heerweg project in Zwijnaarde, Belgium, involves the creation of 28 housing units, distributed in two compact volumes located on opposite sides of the plot. The building model present in the local settlement fabric, which flanks the road, continues in the new construction characterized by "semi-open" houses with front and rear gardens

The houses in the Heerweg project, designed by WE-S architects, are oriented towards the front garden. The open space at the back of the homes can be used as a covered common courtyard. With a 90° rotation of the two built volumes, the ground floor houses are equipped with their own independent entrance. The upper apartments, on the other hand, are accessible through a common entrance on Heerweg Zuid

The entrance of both volumes opens onto a "common living room," a meeting space at the center of both buildings. This area, which spans two floors, encourages interaction and ensures optimal daylight penetration into the heart of the buildings. The organization of all the units into two compact buildings allows for the maintenance of an open space of nearly 30 meters in the center of the site, framing an excellent view of the forest behind

The project aims to reconcile various aspects of the country house typology with that of multi-family housing. Instead of stacking numerous identical floors, the two volumes of the Heerweg project can be interpreted as scaled-down villas. The greenery design, both for the common and private gardens, further characterizes the quality of the intervention
