Through the use of color, the Aurora Arquitectos studio designs this Hostel in Cascais, Portugal, using colors to emphasize or neutralize the building's angular and pyramidal lines
Hostel in Portugal. Strong colors and decisive geometries to give back life to an abandoned Villa
Located in Cascais, Portugal, this ruined villa has been internally transformed back into a Hostel. The Aurora Arquitectos Studio uses the project to follow the angular shapes of the building, neutralizing them with the full color

While the exterior and roof were well preserved, the interior of the building was in ruins. Its complex geometry, with four angular pyramidal volumes determined the structure of the project by providing guidelines for the internal partitions, dividing the plan into 9 modules. In the central module, a staircase joins the three floors, tainting the space with its yellow glow, accentuated by natural light from above. Its rounded corners conceal all the vertical features of the building
The project required a high level of flexibility in terms of future use. A hostel at first, capable of becoming a detached house with few changes. This is how the autonomous volumes containing the bathrooms were created, which are easily removable if you want to transform them into larger bedrooms
Therefore, the entire structure of the building is a result of the logic of an easy future transformation. The main structural grid consists of rolled steel, with light steel frame in slabs and walls. Upstairs, there are 4 bedrooms, each with one bathroom inside with its own volume
At the entrance level we find the reception, the common areas that can be used by all guests, the kitchen and dining room. The basement is also occupied by bedrooms. An external passage, completely painted blue, directly connects the front of the house and the back patio, facing east, with two trees, which represent the open-air living room of the hostel
