The project brief was to stiffen the building and replace the existing roof. The steel corset proposed by Sepka architekti is not only a technically valid element, but also aesthetically pleasing as it becomes a trellis for climbing plants
Steel corset wraps around a dwelling. Reinforcing a 1930s building
The originally recreational building from the 1930s, transformed into a permanent residence is consolidated by the Czech studio Sepka architekti and enveloped in a steel corset, which at the same time serves as a trellis for climbing plants
The entire corset is composed of steel prisms welded by L-shaped profiles into a module that ideally preserves the building's existing openings. Lightweight concrete blocks complete the steel load-bearing part of the second floor. A new reinforced concrete slab serves as a walkable roof terrace that can be accessed directly from the garden by a service staircase inside the steel construction
The interior of the unfinished second floor leaves the concrete blocks and ceiling exposed and is completed with birch plywood furniture. Special importance was also placed on the design of the curtains in each room whose colors were chosen by each family member based on a selected theme
