How the rural architectural structure is renewed in House in Güemes

Studio Zooco redesigns an old rural house by integrating the existing building, faithfully reproducing the local building system consisting of stone walls supporting a wooden pitched roof with tiles. Inside, the spaces develop in sequence.

Respect for the original structure

The nature of this architectural intervention by the studio Zooco, specialized in house renovation projects, is based on the absolute respect for what already exists. Respect not only for the traditional materials used but also for the types of spaces that characterize the interior of the house.
The sequence consists of kitchen/dining room/fireplace/living room/office/library developing in a linear pattern.
Under the same roof, only the main bedroom, hidden behind a library, is separated from the general space.
A second bedroom, accessible using the external stairs in the original passage to the building entrance, is located above the main one, completing the height of the attached building.

Changes to the Facade

The only modifications to the existing architecture are those made to the facades. Existing openings have been enlarged on the east and west facades, with the idea of incorporating nature inside, while the north and south facades have been completely opened. Another notable feature of the house is its privacy system consisting of sliding slits on the south-facing facade, giving users a full view of the outside.

The new structure attached to the existing one

The extension building has been designed with a more rational perspective, an L-shaped configuration, almost in contact with the existing building but without touching it, facilitating the creation of an open space between the buildings. The intervention has adopted the existing style, local woods, stone from the area, white facades, and tiles, together constitute the aesthetic of the unit. Concrete and metal structure represent a contemporary counterpoint to this exceptional example of traditional Cantabrian architecture.
