How to modernize a Victorian house with an extension? Jackson House

Jackson House is a discreet and harmonious extension on the ground floor of a Victorian terraced house, located on a quiet street in Leytonstone. The project manages to be simultaneously subtle and elegant thanks to the careful use of materials, showing extraordinary attention to construction details. The Archive for Space studio drew inspiration from local architecture, such as the Wanstead Temple and the Leyton Townhall, to develop a strict facade that is perfectly integrated into the residential context.

A functional and welcoming space for a growing family

The clients, a growing family, were looking for an affordable, yet durable and functional space. This need allowed Archive for Space to experiment with a palette of durable and readily available materials, but rich in charm. As in other architecture projects of the studio, the focus was on assembling and finishing raw materials, exploring how to transform them to achieve a surprising effect.

A notable example is the concrete block used as a finished surface: through careful processing and a final coat of paint, the concrete is transformed into a warm and textured background, perfect for the family's daily life.

Textural Contrasts for a Warm and Refined Environment

The foundation of the project is characterized by the use of robust materials such as concrete blocks and terracotta tiles, chosen for their durability and character. In contrast, the ceiling is covered in Douglas fir and plywood, creating a contrast that brings lightness and a sense of warmth to the entire space.

The rich tones of the ceiling harmoniously interact with the kitchen and floor coverings, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. Douglas fir has also been used for the facade, where three bay window sections have been enhanced with pediments covered in tiles, in a clear reference to the architecture of the Wanstead Temple.

Design curated to the smallest detail

For the interior design, Archive for Space collaborated with Tabitha Isobel, selecting unique furniture pieces from the Beton Brut collection. The final result is a space that blends raw materials and refined details, creating an environment that combines contemporary aesthetics and a familiar warmth.
