Ancient bakery transformed into a residence, João's House in Porto

João's House is a renovation project in the old town of Porto by Guilherme Machado Vaz, which transforms a former bakery into a house developed on two floors, where the ground floor houses the social spaces and the upper floor the private ones

The transformation of the intended use

The bakery that once served the local population, especially the fishermen, dating back to the 19th century, is being transformed into a residence located in the city of Porto, near the Douro River. The house is spread over two floors, and on the intermediate level there is a small room with the client's music studio. Guilherme Machado Vaz is the architect in charge of renovating the space, specialized in home renovation projects.

Social Spaces Spilling Outdoors

The ground floor encloses the spaces dedicated to social activities, a living room and a kitchen, divided by a bookshelf-credenza that creates not a visual division, but only a physical one. The kitchen extends to the outdoors, almost participating in the neighborhood's public life during household chores.

The upper floor

The space is more compact compared to the kitchen, illuminated by a skylight that reflects light on the various wall textures, offering different shades of white. The upper floor includes two rooms and a bathroom, with two separate entrance doors.
