The space that was previously intended for two apartments, a single room on the ground floor and an area used as a garage, has been converted by NU architectuuratelier into a single-family house with an adjoining work area.
Rehabilitation of a terraced house in Flanders. Essentiality between steel and wood
The architects of the design studio NU architectuuratelier renovate a terraced house on the outskirts of Leuven in the centre of Flanders, Belgium. The project maximizes the space and rehabilitates the existing facade
From the outside, the facade has been stripped back to the essential and the only novelty with respect to the existing one is the bright red door.
From the main door onwards, the development of the project makes the path become completely new. The environment is now characterized by degrees of space separated by transparent movable partitions
First filter: the ground floor facade
Second filter: steel frames with clear glass
Third filter: the motorbike room and the entrance hall
Fourth filter: the geometrically patterned glass sliding door between the study and dining area
The rear facade is clad with dark grey painted wood boards, installed diagonally on one level, with large openings. The new window design contrasts with the glazed gallery of the original design
The staircase has been moved inside to maximize the space in the garden at the back
The window frames are a combination of steel and painted wood profiles
