Prefabricated housing modules in Finland. Flexible configurations at different scales
A design project built by the Wood Program at Aalto University's School of Art Design and Architecture. The installation of housing modules was designed to address the current problematic real estate situation in Finland
The project uses a system of prefabricated and transportable housing modules that can be stacked or arranged in one of the larger configurations for a specified period of time and then moved to another location when necessary
The scale and flexibility of the project enables a wide range of configurations to adapt to various contexts. Both in urban and suburban areas, in any case, the units are delivered finished, with only the stacking and the connection work done on site
To test and demonstrate the capabilities of this approach, three modules were built by the students of the programme and stacked in a mini tower in the courtyard of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum in the centre of Helsinki
Aalto University's School of Art Design and Architecture began designing the units in January 2016 and construction began in April 2016. The project was completed at the end of June 2016
