Guarding medieval memory, rediscovering the landscape: La Tossa

The castle of Tossa de Montbui, located on a hill southwest of the city of Igualada at 620 meters above sea level, once a strategic point for military defense since the Middle Ages, is being restored by the architectural firm Meritxell Inaraja Arquitecta.

Between history and innovation

Located on a hill 620 meters above sea level, the castle of La Tossa de Montbui has been a strategic point for territorial control for centuries. After years of abandonment and deterioration, the restoration project, led by Meritxell Inaraja Arquitecta, aimed to consolidate the existing structures and reinterpret the original architectural elements. This intervention is part of a broader vision on renovation projects, where the past is recovered without giving up contemporary solutions that ensure its enjoyment.

The historical analysis guides the project

The restoration is based on a detailed study of the tower, which has revealed the ancient presence of a slab roof and a staircase located along the western wall, which has now collapsed. The architectural proposal involves strengthening the existing walls and integrating new elements that recall the original structure. The goal is to maintain the charm of the ruins, respecting their historical materiality and integrating solutions that make the spaces accessible without altering their identity.

New observation point on the territory

One of the most significant interventions is the reconstruction of the western staircase, inspired by those carved into the walls of medieval towers. This allows access to the level of the ancient roof, transformed into a panoramic point overlooking the region and the border castles. A small balcony to the north, built at the original access point to the tower, completes the restoration, offering a new perspective on the past and the surrounding landscape.
