Huge wooden books create the space for the Lobby of the Philosophers Residence in Latvia
The land on which the Philosophers Residence stands with its new Lobby, designed by OpenAD, has a rich history that is directly related to philosophy
The main feature of the lobby is its library - a 12-metre high bookcase made up of huge 'book pages' that hide the countless bookshelves of the residents' common library. The room is furnished by OpenAD with a variety of lounge furniture to encourage its use as a reading space or area for holding brief meetings. The concierge counter is made of wood, following the library design theme
The light coloured finish gives a sense of infinity to the already huge space and highlights the bookcase. The architectural elements made of glass, such as the parapets on the upper levels, are used in order not to steal the scene from the giant book, a characteristic element of the design. The view of the Vicolo dei Filosofi with its century-old maple trees opens up through the glass walls, giving additional breathing space to the three-storey hall
