Loyly: Finnish sauna and terrace on the Baltic Sea

The building, sauna and outdoor auditorium, characterized by wooden slats and designed by the architecture firm AVANTO, is located in the Hernesaari area, a former industrial area on the waterfront of Helsinki that is being transformed into a residential area.

Evocative space on the shores of the Baltic Sea

Located in Hernesaari, Helsinki, Löyly is an extraordinary public sauna that has quickly transformed a former industrial area into a vibrant cultural and tourist destination. Designed by architects Ville Hara and Anu Puustinen of Avanto Architects, Löyly offers a modern interpretation of the traditional Finnish sauna experience. The building, with a total area of 1071 square meters, stands out for its innovative structure in thermally treated wood, made up of over 4000 custom-cut planks to create a cloak that wraps around a black rectangular volume.

Typical Finnish Experience

Like several architectural projects in Finland, the design of Löyly aims to harmoniously integrate architecture with the surrounding coastal landscape. Its wooden covering not only provides visual privacy to guests but also allows them to enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and the city without being visible from the outside. This design also facilitates protection from the elements and reduces energy consumption for cooling the interior spaces. The structure includes three wood-heated saunas, a terrace that extends to the sea, and a restaurant serving dishes that blend contemporary cuisine with Scandinavian traditions.

The sauna is the traditional Finnish sauna, which can be experienced by tourists throughout the year, a must-visit for those exploring Finland. The entire building also serves as a large outdoor auditorium for activities on the sea.
