Maison Molaire and flexible design for the contemporary family

The search for design for the contemporary family continues: life today is unpredictable and the types of inhabitants are much less standardized than in the past. And the homes? The interiors of Maison Molaire are a new answer

The home for the contemporary family

The "standard" family of today could be described as people who share a domestic space, not necessarily just one, adults and children come and go, they have different habits and rhythms. Homes are lived in both temporarily and permanently. The architecture studio BUREAU observes that there cannot actually be a true standard, neither for the family, nor consequently in the design criteria for a family home

Architecture made of textile partitions

"The recognition of simple housing diversities seems to have no place in architectural, legal, and cultural standards," writes Daniel Zamarbide of BUREAU. In Maison Molaire, the designers provide a spatial response to their unique "elastic family": an architecture made of textile partitions and glass surfaces

The structure of Maison Molaire

Maison Molaire in Geneva, Switzerland, is a building from the early 80s that previously housed a dental office, shops, and residences. It is a mixed-use construction that features a structurally free space, flooded with light from two skylights perpendicular to the significant north-facing openings

A living space, in constant change

Opening, closing, seeing or hiding, and all the intermediate situations become the physical experience of living thanks to the partitions managed with fabrics. For the rest, the house is characterized by industrial wood panels for the floor, the same in all spaces and necessary partitions. Furniture, objects, carpets, and fixed furnishings are treated as if everything is alive, like a stage without spectators where everything is a relationship, conversation, movement. And disorder is a possibility contemplated and integrated into the space
