A Portuguese building dating back to the 20th century undergoes a rehabilitation intervention carried out by the architects of rar.studio, who, in addition to a structural reinforcement, committed to improving the energy performance and comfort of the apartments.

The rebirth of the historic building

In the Anjos neighborhood of Lisbon, the Manchester Building has been reborn thanks to the intervention of rar.studio, which has transformed a historic building from the 20th century into a model of contemporary architectural projects. Before the intervention, the property was in an advanced state of decay, with only three out of ten apartments inhabited. The rehabilitation aimed to improve the structure from a technical standpoint, without neglecting the comfort of the living spaces and energy performance. The result is a balance between innovation and respect for the past, enriching the architectural heritage of the neighborhood.

Structural and Decorative Restoration

The project involved both the structure and the decorative elements of the building. The main facade was carefully restored with attention to the original details, while the staircase regained its historical beauty. The roof, now beyond repair, was completely rebuilt, ensuring adequate protection for the entire building. At the back, an elevator was installed to improve accessibility, and the balconies were expanded with a new metal structure. The reinforcement of the structure breathed new life into a building that seemed destined for abandonment.

Customization and interior details

The apartments, although all subjected to a homogeneous spatial reorganization, have been personalized to meet the needs and desires of the new owners. This flexibility has allowed for the creation of modern and comfortable spaces, without losing the connection to the building's historical identity. The carefully restored original decorative elements represent one of the most distinctive aspects of the intervention. Details such as moldings and interior finishes tell the story of the building, harmoniously combining with contemporary architectural solutions.
