A Tribute to Vernacular Architecture with a Modern Touch

Designed by Desai Chia Architecture in close collaboration with Environment Architects (AOR), this unique residence, located on a wooded promontory overlooking Lake Michigan, pays homage to the vernacular architecture of neighboring villages while introducing elements of contemporary design. The residence consists of three interconnected structures: one dedicated to common areas such as the living room, kitchen, and a covered terrace with a breathtaking view of the lake, while the other two house the sleeping area.

Natural Ripples: the Roof Dancing with the Terrain

The house's roof, with its ripples reminiscent of local fishermen's houses, harmonizes with the natural landscape, following the movement of the terrain. This design choice not only respects tradition but also adds dynamism to the building's silhouette. A distinctive feature is the 20-foot overhang on the south side, extending the living space outdoors, creating a sheltered terrace with views of the lake and surrounding woods.

Shou Sugi Ban: beauty and natural durability

The exteriors of the house are treated with the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, a process of wood carbonization that increases its resistance to insects and decay, giving the facade a dark and evocative appearance, particularly captivating at sunrise and sunset. The sustainable use of wood continues inside, where wood from dying trees has been reclaimed and transformed into furniture, flooring, and ceiling panels, showcasing a commitment to responsible design practices.
