Nautical Sports Center: architecture between land and sea in Formentera

The Nautical Sports Center, designed by Marià Castelló, embodies the dialogue between the Mediterranean and the Ses Salines Natural Park: a sustainable architecture, built in wood, that blends seamlessly into the landscape, offering functionality and minimal environmental impact.

A Project Between the Mediterranean and Pristine Nature

The Nautical Sports Center is located in the port of La Savina, the main gateway to Formentera. This unique location, between the Mediterranean Sea and the saltwater lagoon that is part of the Ses Salines Natural Park, has given rise to one of the architecture projects that celebrates the fusion between humans and the natural environment. Marià Castelló has designed an architecture that harmoniously integrates into the landscape, respecting the unique characteristics of the territory. The protection provided by the open sea and the natural shape of the bay made it possible to create a natural harbor, now home to the sailing school, strengthening the historical connection between the island and navigation.

Distinct Volumes and Platforms Integrated into the Landscape

The project is organized into two independent volumes, aligned to meet specific functions such as classrooms, offices, and changing rooms. Between them, a shading structure serves as a connecting element and main access point, maintaining visual permeability that engages with the surrounding landscape. The southern platform extends like a pier toward the lagoon, creating both a symbolic and physical bridge between land and water. This design choice enhances the bay, emphasizing the relationship between the center and the marine environment without compromising the site's natural integrity.

Traditional Materials for Sustainable Architecture

The entire complex was built using wood as the primary material, evoking the traditional coastal cabins of the island. This choice, combined with dry and lightweight construction techniques, minimizes environmental impact. Pine slats, selected for their ability to develop a gray patina over time, seamlessly blend with the natural context. The dock was constructed using submerged wooden piles, a traditional technique that ensures stability and durability. Meanwhile, the external platform is supported by prefabricated and reversible micropiles, offering a modern solution that adheres to the principles of bio-architecture.

Energy Efficiency and Comfort in Harmony with Nature

The design prioritized natural materials, avoiding the use of PVC and other synthetic substances. The enclosures were conceived to be hygroscopic and vapor-permeable, ensuring high energy efficiency and a healthy indoor environment. This approach reflects the project’s commitment to sustainability and user well-being. The result is a modern and functional architecture that dialogues with the island’s past while projecting toward a more harmonious and eco-friendly future for Formentera.
