Panda Pavilions: a fusion of architecture and landscape for bears

Awarded by the jury in the Sustainable Cultural Building category for the 2024 Architizer A+ Awards, the Panda Pavilions, inspired by the natural landscape of Chengdu, China, are designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration for the care of giant pandas

Prioritizing the construction of a friendly environment for animals

The design of the four Panda Pavilions is conceived by Ping Jiang, FAIA, of Atelier Ping Jiang | EID Arch as a fusion of architecture and landscape, drawing inspiration from the Chengdu prairies in a convergence of architecture, landscape, and land art. The project offers a pedestrian exploration experience for visitors and prioritizes building a friendly environment for animals: as is customary in this type of architectural projects, the goal is to minimize alienation from the wild environment and promote biodiversity conservation

Four large circular spaces for an extraordinary educational laboratory

Four large circular outdoor spaces are the oases that host the giant pandas; the wooden slat structures that contain them create a poetic architectural effect that recalls the soft forms of nature. Thus, an extraordinary research laboratory is born to host the bears and study their behaviors and activities, as well as to serve the community for educational and recreational purposes, attracting millions of panda lovers every year
