The Labyrinth of Sant Jordi Park: an inclusive space for play and discovery

The new labyrinth of Parco Sant Jordi represents a significant innovation in urban architecture, bringing a breath of freshness and creativity. A place where freedom and inclusion are at the center, where children, adults, and teenagers can have fun without limits. A work that, hidden among the trees, invites discovery and exploration, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for all park visitors.

An innovative urban architecture project

The analysis of the pre-existing conditions of Parco Sant Jordi and the age profile of the users led to a clear conclusion: the proposal had to bring originality and become a new point of reference, unique and recognizable to the public. This project of urban architecture curated by Arjub Studio addressed the lack of usability of the park, catering to people with functional diversity, children, adults, and teenagers. Everyone can enjoy it in total freedom.

A place of free and inclusive play

Away from stereotypes and unlike anything that has been in the park until now, the labyrinth invites to experience it in a myriad of different ways. It manages to establish all kinds of playful connections, not only in terms of play, but also in relation to the context and the narrative that emerges from the specific location. Hidden among the trees, the labyrinth invites exploration and discovery, appearing differently depending on the angle from which it is observed.

Structure and materiality

With a height of 1.5 meters, the structure of the maze is formed by a grid of three-dimensional planks measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 meters that give spatial shape, sequence, and modulate the game. The tubular profiles are intertwined in two different ways, responding to the basic differentiation of the maze between passage-path or wall-delimitation. The unique geometric shapes give character and enliven the environment. The dimensions of the maze create totally different spatial perceptions depending on the age and height of the users. For children, it offers freedom and space to run, climb, and hide. For adults, it ensures visibility and tranquility. The colors have been chosen to highlight the difference between the base structure modulated at 1.5 meters and the singular elements, creating a unique and dynamic visual experience.

A proximity maze: sustainability and cost

When designing the maze, factors such as sustainability and costs were taken into consideration. The structure is designed in a way that allows for systematic production, reducing production costs. This approach has enabled the creation of a tailor-made project, adapted to the environment and made by a local blacksmith.

The maze was designed exclusively for Parco Sant Jordi and does not come from any catalog or playground equipment manufacturer. This has allowed for the creation of a site-specific work that integrates perfectly into the park's natural setting and offers an unparalleled gaming experience.
