Multispecialty medical practice: welcoming and functional architecture

The project of transforming two adjacent commercial premises into a multi-specialty medical clinic presented a design challenge on two main levels.

A new design challenge

On the one hand, domECO studio aimed to make the most of the existing spaces' potential, constrained by the pre-existing structure. On the other hand, the objective was to make an environment that is typically characterized by its sterility welcoming and hospitable.

The distribution of the spaces

The obtained spaces have been divided into three main functional areas: the waiting room, the reception, and the examination rooms. This layout has been designed to optimize the use of the spaces and maximize the number of available examination rooms, making the medical office functional and well-organized. Particular attention has been given to the creation of a common technical room for two ophthalmology offices, which share specialized equipment, promoting a more efficient use of resources.

The heart of the project: the waiting room

The focal point of this project is undoubtedly the waiting room, designed as an elegant and welcoming lounge, far from the traditional and cold look of hospital environments. To achieve this result, custom-made furniture has been created, combined with colorful furnishings, following an art deco style that adds a touch of sophistication and warmth to the space.

Principles of Human Centered Design and Biophilia

The design was inspired by the principles of Human Centered Design and biophilia, which emphasize the importance of visual contact with nature, even within medical spaces. However, being located on the ground floor of a building in the city center, the project could not benefit from expansive natural views. Additionally, the clinical nature of the premises requires strict standards of hygiene and cleanliness. To overcome these limitations, a wall decorated with three large arches covered in jungle-themed wallpaper was conceived. The soft colors and elegant tones of the wallpaper were chosen to instill a sense of tranquility, also used within the medical offices.

An outdoor environment for patients' well-being

In addition to indoor spaces, the medical office has a furnished outdoor courtyard, accessible from a corridor directly connected to the waiting room. This outdoor space, designed to accommodate patients waiting during the warm season, helps create a more serene and pleasant stay environment, moving away from the sterile image associated with this type of architectural projects in the healthcare sector.
