In Loja, in the Andes south of Ecuador, at 2060 meters above sea level, Casa Fundamentos manages to create a welcoming living and productive experience among the reinforced concrete walls that define its structure, spaces, and aesthetics

Architecture defined by structure. Flexibility of space and functions

Nestled among the other row houses in the residential neighborhood where it stands, Casa Fundamentos is one of the creations of Holger Cuadrado Arquitectura. Completed in 2024, it is one of the architectural projects of the studio, which loves to experiment with materials and spaces. This building, created on a small lot measuring 7.60 x 13.50 meters, is defined by its own structure and cleverly manages to accommodate both a "productive" area and a residence, showcasing remarkable flexibility of space

Exposed reinforced concrete for a construction strategy that frees up the interiors

The structure, consisting of two side walls and two intermediate diaphragms in exposed reinforced concrete, is reduced to the bare minimum. This construction strategy frees up the interiors, allowing for ample fluidity of spaces. The external architectural composition is characterized by a 5-meter wide box, cantilevered for 3 meters, which extends the main volume towards the street. Below, a covered patio is created for children's play, adjacent to the area dedicated to commercial/work activities

Spatial container for different functions and users: the productive house

The design principle is to create a spatial container for different functions and different users. The four levels of the building are divided with basement and ground floor, independent and directly connected to the street, dedicated to work activities; the two upper levels are dedicated to the actual house. This configuration allows residents to develop entrepreneurial activities without altering the domestic environment. Even the levels of the house are designed to be transformable according to the future needs of the family

Sensitivity, connection, and protection for contemporary living

Equipped with topographic and landscape sensitivity, Casa Fundamentos meets the needs of contemporary living. Connected with its surroundings, the house frames views of the Andes mountain range and the tree planted in the courtyard, enriching the visual experience from its interiors and integrating passive bioclimatic strategies in harmony with its environment
