Duplex renovation in San Domenico, art of combining history and modernity

The renovation of this house located in the historic district of Villanova in Cagliari represents a perfect balance between tradition and modernity. By preserving the historical essence of the building, with high ceilings, stone walls, and wooden fixtures, the intervention has been able to enhance these elements through a design that provides modern comfort and functionality.

Day-Night Environment Reversal

One of the most interesting choices made by architect Francesca Olla, an expert in home renovation, is the reversal of the typical layout of the environments. The renovation of the Duplex in San Domenico has indeed shifted the living area to the upper floor, creating a spacious open space that integrates the living room, dining room, and kitchen. From here, there is access to a panoramic terrace, enhanced by seating along the railing, covered with typical 1950s cement tiles, creating an ideal space to enjoy the typical atmosphere of this neighborhood.

Lower Floor Night Area

On the lower floor is the night area, which ensures privacy and tranquility. The two bedrooms maintain the traditional proportions of historic homes, with high ceilings and windows overlooking one of the characteristic squares of Villanova. The walls, treated with soft pastel tones typical of the area, create a welcoming atmosphere. Each room has a private bathroom, renovated with modern materials such as porcelain stoneware, in a harmony between ancient and contemporary.

Distinctive Elements

Another distinctive element is the creative use of cement tiles, reused in various spaces of the house, in combination with wooden doors and wrought iron railings, which help maintain the traditional charm of the building. The suspended staircase that connects the two levels adds a touch of modernity, while concealing a half-way guest bathroom, optimizing the spaces.

In summary, the renovation of this house in Villanova manages to respect the historical identity of the building and the neighborhood, while introducing contemporary solutions that enhance its functionality. The result is a welcoming, modern home that is harmoniously integrated into the historic context of Cagliari.
