The historic building, dating back to the 1920s, is included in a redevelopment project that, in addition to preserving the historicity of the building, meets the needs of a constantly growing number of university students.

Protecting history with an eye on modernity

The evolving needs of the student population at Montana State University require the transformation of spaces over time, a task undertaken by the firm Cushing Terrell in collaboration with SRG Partnership. Romney Hall is being modernized while preserving its historical character through a renovation project.

The transformation of spaces

A series of analyses and evaluations on the architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical systems, integrated with conceptual studies aimed at the well-being of students and faculty, allows for the development of an extremely functional design solution with high aesthetic value. The former building dedicated to physical education is transformed into necessary educational spaces: 17 classrooms and centers for mathematics and writing, for both veterans and disabled students, with over 1,000 seats.

The intertwining of history and cutting-edge technologies

All floors of the building are made accessible thanks to a new core of stairs and an elevator, which incorporates SolarWall technology: the elevator walls are clad in dark-colored perforated metal panels designed to capture sunlight-warmed air, connected to the building's heating system. Aluminum walls make up the envelope: a high degree of transparency reveals the historic brick wall.
