SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is an oasis of well-being for people and the environment

In a public park in Singapore, the SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is a facility designed to offer health and wellness activities to national servicemen and their families, but architects have also created it as a generator of well-being for the surrounding environment

Nature, Fitness, and Community: an oasis of well-being

Selected by the jury as the winner of the Architizer A+ 2024 award in the category of sustainable architecture projects for Sports and Recreation Buildings, the SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse was designed by DP Architects, in collaboration with its specialists DP Engineers (Structure), DP Green, and DP Sustainable Design. A first of its kind, nestled in the park, the clubhouse becomes a comprehensive oasis of well-being

The clubhouse as a model of sustainable development for the well-being of the entire community

The architecture of the SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse responds to and reflects the surrounding nature, which, through innovative design elements, is integrated into the building creating a model of sustainable development that promotes the well-being of the entire community. A large green courtyard, at the heart of the building, maximizes natural light and ventilation of the clubhouse, reducing the use of artificial lighting and mechanical cooling, while fully integrating the building with the park

Lifecycle Carbon Footprint Assessment in the Design Phase

Another fundamental element of the project is the large vessels positioned along the building perimeter based on computational fluid dynamics calculations: they mitigate rain in exposed areas and allow for rainwater harvesting for irrigation. Integrating a lot of vegetation in the building also helps to reduce the urban heat island effect. Many other design and construction measures have been implemented to minimize the intervention's carbon footprint: LED lights, green concrete, recycled steel, photovoltaic panels, etc

Singapore Building Construction and Authority Green Mark Platinum Certification - Super Low Energy

The project is also a recipient of the Singapore Building Construction and Authority Green Mark Platinum Certification - Super Low Energy, with sustainability badges for exceptional performance in the areas of Whole Life Carbon and Health & Wellbeing. The abundant biophilia present throughout the SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse has created a rare closeness to nature that is hard to find in urban settings. Recreational spaces and communal gardens are creatively intertwined with the clubhouse's wide range of services, working synergistically to bring people together and promote a sense of community, as well as physical and mental well-being
