Sail House, the Californian villa inspired by nautical themes

Sail House, designed by the award-winning sustainable architect David Hertz, is completely inspired by the nautical context, from which it takes its name: the reference to the wooden boat with masts and sails make the project unique in its kind.

Inspiration: the sailboat

Sail House is a collection of structures that make up a residence and several accommodations.
The main inspiration of architect David Herz, awarded for his numerous sustainable architecture projects, was the wooden boat with its masts and sails. Due to the difficulty of on-site construction, the buildings were prefabricated, packed into 15 containers, and shipped, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste.

Zero-Impact Prefabricated

The prefabricated structure rests on a concrete box that serves as a tank for collecting water. The aluminum beams can be cantilevered from the base, impacting very little on the surrounding jungle: sustainability was one of the main objectives of the Sail House project

A 100% sustainable project

Sustainable features include rainwater harvesting, the use of reclaimed wood, passive ventilation, and solar panels. The project generates its own electricity, collects its own water, and provides a favorable indoor/outdoor ratio beneficial to the local microclimate. The tensile roof membranes provide deep shade and large overhangs from the equatorial sun, not achievable with a typical rigid roof.
