Science Park, designed by LAAR, is today a reference point of development and interchange in the community, a meeting point that has managed to transform the urban and social structure in the south of Yucatan. But how was it conceived? In 2009, a group of young students, children of Mayan farmers belonging to the rural community of Dzán, decided to found an organization to support the most vulnerable segment of the population, children and young adolescents, including school dropouts, substance abuse and lack of vocations are increasing dramatically
Science Park, science and culture pillars for new life projects
Thanks to the Scientific Community of Dzán, a non-profit organization at the service of the most disadvantaged young people located in one of the oldest villages in Yucatan, Mexico, commissioned LAAR studios to build the Science Park, a pavilion that conveys a new reality
Over time, the need for more and more adequate space led the authorities into donating 1 hectare on the outskirts of the village, a lot surrounded by orange plantations and easily accessible from other nearby villages. The Science Park pavilion appears as a refuge, which seeks to move away from traditional education and tries to build a completely new universe that addresses a nascent reality with science and culture as its pillars
A botanical garden flanks the pavilion, whose layout is guided by ancient Mayan traditions. Inside the botanical garden, a multipurpose pavilion, consisting of a service block and an open space, oriented from northeast to southwest, turns into a tunnel, whose entrances are large windows overlooking the garden and at the same time allows the extension of space and different configurations depending on the requirements
