The Panyaden International School library in Hangdong, Thailand, has been designed to create a stimulating, peaceful, and comfortable atmosphere for teenage students: it offers traditional spaces with tables for reading and studying, but also lounge areas with a more relaxed style, decorated with bean bags and cushions.

Circular Plant

The Panyaden International School library, designed by Chiangmai Life Architects, has a circular plant with a central skylight that opens up to the sky. The innermost circle, which sinks below the floor level, forms the lounge area; bamboo arches arranged radially form the main bookshelves. The bookshelves divide the circular space into sections.

Space Organization

The library also houses 2 soundproof study rooms for group sessions and a small office for the librarian. The walls are made of terracotta bricks and the roof is made of bamboo designed on 2 levels: the structural bamboo level that supports the next level without the need for support pillars; the second level is a skylight dome that provides natural light to the entire library below.

Ventilation System

Among various architectural projects, this library stands out because it is equipped with a state-of-the-art centralized cooling system that gently blows cold air downwards, eliminating the discomfort of a cold draft. It also features a ventilation system that provides ultra-clean air; by blowing filtered air into the room, it creates a pressure that prevents polluted air from entering even when the entrance door is open. This system continuously provides oxygenated air, creating an optimal environment for studying.
