Similarity with new individuality. Monow House, the son's house

In Pinklao, Bangkok, a son buys the plot of land next to his parents' house to build his new residence: the Monow House relates to the family home with respect and originality, sharing spaces and finishes without giving up the expression of the owner's individuality

Stays that look at each other, fitness room, extra parking spaces and connected kitchens

Designed by the Thai studio archi.smith, which operates in the field of architecture projects and interior design, the Monow House is designed to be in close relationship with the client's parents' house located on the adjacent property. The result, after removing the boundary wall, is a shared courtyard garden that visually connects the father's TV room with the son's living room, a fitness room and extra parking spaces for the whole family, and a covered walkway that connects the kitchens of the two houses allowing the sharing of services

Aesthetic relationship between the two buildings: finishing materials

Spread over three floors, the Monow House owes its shape to both a careful analysis of distances from neighbors, done to protect privacy, and calculations made to ensure the maximum natural light and ventilation for the new construction and the parents' house. To meet the client's request to establish an aesthetic relationship between the two buildings, the architects propose to use materials for this purpose: thus, the cladding of the top floor is the same as the existing house but reinterpreted in a modern key

Triangular ceramic tiles with hollow core

The volume of the third floor, most exposed to weather conditions, is completely covered with triangular ceramic tiles with a hollow core. They act as a heat barrier in two ways: thanks to the air circulating in the hollow section of the tiles and thanks to their three-dimensional shape that causes them to self-shade for 50% of the surface. The use of tiles with such a unique shape required careful design attention. Since they cannot be cut, all wall measurements are custom-made. The second floor, on the other hand, is covered with tiles of the same color but from a different manufacturer than those of the family home

The interiors of Monow House

An entrance with intentionally dark tones creates a contrast with the greenery and light of the courtyard it leads to. The living room is designed with double height, and its wall facing the north garden is completely glazed, ensuring maximum light with minimal heat gain. Suspended from the structure above, the volume of the studio on the second floor does not obstruct the view to the outside
