Sleek, dynamic, and jagged volume: the Mater Apartment Building

In a densely built residential area of Lugano, Switzerland, the Mater Apartment Building fits in to complete the neighborhood with its innovative impact, light despite the bulk of the construction, reminiscent in its slender shape with its dynamically projecting balconies of flower stems reaching towards the sky

Transparency, lightness, and verticality

One of the latest residential architecture projects by the Swiss studio Davide Macullo Architects, the Mater Apartment Building is located in one of Lugano's urban expansion areas from the 1970s that has preserved several green spaces, thanks to strategic territorial planning, providing breathing room for the buildings. The new apartment building fits in with its slender volume created by the non-orthogonal lines of its floor plan and the sense of transparency, lightness, and verticality given by the light colors and the composition of the facades

The visually permeable volume

The Mater Apartment Building was designed by the studio to be perceived, thanks to the visual permeability of the volume, as much smaller than the space it fills between the buildings, enhancing the overall view of the neighborhood. The 7-story architecture fits like a thin wedge into the existing urban fabric of via Luigi Taddei in Lugano Viganello. The views from the inside are designed to overlook the more open external areas, allowing for a wide breath and a greater pleasantness to the apartments

A new planet-friendly way of living

Along the street where the Mater Apartment Building is located, various flowerbeds and green spaces frame the view of the building. The architects envision the new residents walking home accompanied by the vegetation towards a new way of living rich in oxygen and symbolizing a more planet-friendly life
