Alexander Gorlin Architects is commissioned to create a part-time residence for a large family that was both private and discreet. Sterling Forest House's main design challenge was to gain approval for a bold, contemporary architectural building in a village famous for its historic residences
The chameleon-like Sterling Forest House which blends into the environment
Set into the rock of the steeply sloping site, the Sterling Forest House blends into nature with its gray and salmon-colored granite cladding, green roof, and mahogany windows
Therefore, the house was set into the steeply sloping rock of the site, and the use of locally quarried stone that would blend with its surroundings was preferred. The end result sets a new architectural standard for the community, achieved with minimal impact of the house on its surroundings
Arriving on a winding driveway, the house, as mentioned above, is set into a natural rock shelf, allowing for an L-shaped floor plan that wraps around an interior rock garden and entry into the living space level: kitchen, dining room and living room. The lower level includes all bedrooms and private spaces, each with a private terrace overlooking the forest
Particular attention was paid to trying to preserve the natural vegetation of the site. Both the location and orientation of the plan have been changed several times to minimize tree removal. Similarly, the path of the driveway wraps around the older trees in an effort to preserve them
