Two 1950s barns located in the city of Wangjiangjing, in the vicinity of hundreds of acres of swampland and the TaoChang Canal are being transformed by Roarc Renew into an art center, the TaoCang Art Center, which is currently a landmark of the site based on its characteristics and historical background
Discovering the soul hidden in an old building and bringing it back to light: TaoCang Art Center
Roarc Renew is tasked with unearthing the energy stored in an old building and reviving it through a renovation project that will create the TaoCang Art Center in Jiaxing, China
Specifically, the western barn would serve as a commercial gallery, while the eastern barn would serve as an art gallery. The two barns present a unique structure, thanks to the concrete arch support system and for this reason the whole space should be used for exhibition spaces while auxiliary functions will be set outdoors
The two old barns are located side by side and in parallel. In this context, the best solution to add structure to the original architecture is to add an "accompanying" structure. In this case, corridors are added that extend the exhibition space to the outside while protecting the inside and paying homage and respect to the history of the old barns
Through the monumental brick structure, the century-old barn continues to speak to the world. Similar to the design of the drainage system, the herringbone pattern is formed by combining bricks with three different modules. Modern bricks in the hallways connect the old barn bricks, which is a tribute to past memories
