Located on a long, narrow lot in Toronto's Bloor West neighborhood, Brother's Residence is a 3,600-square-foot three-family building on Lippincott Street. This multi-unit architecture, with its strong orthogonal geometric form marks a positive addition to the wide variety of low-rise residential and commercial buildings in the Harbord Street area

Designed by Alva Roy Architects, the interior spaces meet the functional needs of each brother's family without compromising form. Three thousand six hundred square feet of well-planned and light-filled living space are distributed on the four levels of the three units. Three bedrooms, main entrance, kitchen, living room, dining room and office occupy the lowest level. A master bedroom opens onto a courtyard below street level, the latter ensuring Brother's Residence's balance between urban building and green refuge. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room, utility and laundry room occupy the second and third floors, and a large private balcony on the upper level introduces sunlight into the master suite

Designed to blend carefully into the surrounding street, the house is presented as a three-story structure with a combination of rich, natural materials dominating the facade. The combination of Eramosa stone and Shou Sugi Ban cedar wood is complemented by porcelain tiles and laser-cut anodized aluminum used for finely decorated screen panels The interior stairs are made of oak panels, also used for the floors and handrail

Despite Lippincott's urban context, access to outdoor space is not neglected: to the outdoors is a rear balcony from the main floor; there is also a courtyard and a terrace on the third floor, dedicated to the master suite, ensuring outdoor but intimate relaxation. The connection to the outdoors through the large windows can also be fully enjoyed from the interior spaces, through the cleverly framed views of the neighborhood
