It all began with a client's request to architect Robbert De Goede to transform an old gym in the historic center of Amsterdam into an apartment - The gymnasium - , so it was necessary to transform a huge and cold space into an intimate and livable place and, in short into a real home. Over 100 LED lamps were used in a very large lighting project, with the aim of designing an intimate and livable home
The gymnasium. A gymnasium transformed into a bright and intimate loft with an industrial style
Picture the possibility of building a new home in a former gymnasium, a space that everyone knows and many architects have fantasized about. In The gymnasium project, 10 skylights and a glazed facade let light flood the building with its large trusses. A combination of new and recycled materials made it possible for architect Robbert De Goede to create a new use

Ten skylights bring a deluge of daylight to the ground floor. To take advantage of the building's height, architect Robbert De Goede created a new mezzanine floor with a steel and wood structure. The new facade also incorporates steel details. The ground floor ceiling is a copy of the original sloping roof ceiling
The stair railing, doors and windows on the walkway are all made of yellow cedar, which gives an extremely pleasant feel and smell. The recycled oak flooring, the Ultrasoft Alpaca carpet and the Eucalyptus wood finishes also contribute to the idea of making the architecture become a second layer. The use of plants also played an important role with a landscaped garden is visible from many points in the house and a large tobacco plant placed in the center of the main space
